Dhanbad: Schoolgirls on Tuesday tied rakhis to motorists at major intersections across Dhanbad and urged them to follow traffic rules for their own safety and that of others.The “Rakhi for Road Safety” campaign was organised on Tuesday on the directions of deputy commissioner Aditya Ranjan as part of the Raksha Bandhan celebrations. The initiative aimed to create awareness about road safety and encourage responsible driving through an innovative appeal rather than routine enforcement.From 9 am to 2 pm, students from govt schools participated in the campaign at busy locations, including City Centre Chowk, Pooja Talkies, Steel Gate, Gol Building and Memco More. The campaign was conducted at around 15 major intersections in the city.The students tied sacred threads to the wrists of two-wheeler and four-wheeler riders and sought a promise that they would wear helmets, fasten seat belts, avoid overspeeding and obey traffic signals. Drivers found without helmets were stopped and politely made aware of the importance of protecting their lives.Traffic DSP Rohit Kumar Saw said road safety rules should not be treated as a mere formality but should become part of people’s daily habits. He said responsible driving could significantly reduce loss of life and property caused by road accidents.He also cautioned motorists to remain particularly careful during the monsoon, when water-filled potholes can make roads hazardous and increase the risk of vehicles losing balance.The unusual initiative received appreciation from motorists and pedestrians, many of whom assured the students that they would follow traffic rules. The campaign demonstrated how a simple gesture by schoolchildren can deliver a powerful message: every safe journey begins with responsible driving.
