Kanpur: The 28-year-old daughter of a special judicial magistrate has accused her husband, a sub-inspector, and her father-in-law of harassing her for additional dowry. The Friends Colony police registered an FIR late Saturday after the victim’s mother provided details of the alleged harassment.According to the complaint, Priyanshi, the daughter of special judicial magistrate Shyam Pratap Singh and a resident of Adda Paltu Sundarpur Road, married Surjit Singh of Bareilly on May 28, 2025. Surjit is posted as a sub-inspector with the 28th PAC Battalion in Etawah. The complaint alleged that disputes over dowry intensified within a year of the marriage, with her in-laws demanding more dowry.Her mother claimed that around Rs 40 lakh was spent on her daughter’s wedding. This included Rs 10 lakh transferred to a bank account, along with cash, household items, a car and gold jewellery. However, the complaint stated that after the marriage, Surjit and his father, Nawal Singh, demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh and a gold chain.When the demands were not fulfilled, Priyanshi was allegedly subjected to mental and physical harassment. Her family claimed that the demands continued to increase, causing her considerable distress. Shashi Prabha further alleged that on April 4, 2026, while Priyanshi was pregnant, she was expelled from the house after her cash and valuables were allegedly confiscated.Amit Mishra, in-charge of the Friends Colony police station, confirmed that a case had been registered against Surjit Singh and Nawal Singh under relevant sections related to dowry harassment on the basis of Shashi Prabha’s complaint. He said the investigation was underway and that further action would be taken based on the facts and evidence that emerge during the inquiry.
