Jaipur: An overflowing sewage drain in Ramganj’s Neelgaron Ka Mohalla left a Jaipur Municipal Corporation garbage hopper stuck for nearly two hours Friday, after the water made it difficult to distinguish the road from an open drain. The hopper driver, Santosh Kumar, said he had moved aside to let another vehicle pass through the narrow lane when the vehicle’s two wheels slipped into the drain.“I thought it was the road and that there was just water on it. I had no idea there was an open drain underneath. Both wheels went in,” he said, adding that locals tried but failed to pull out the vehicle. The civic body later sent assistance.Residents said the incident highlighted a long-standing sewage problem in the area. “Today, it was only a garbage hopper that got stuck, but we live amid this overflowing sewage for all 12 months,” said resident Abdul Salman.“Someone visiting the area would find it difficult to stand in this filthy, foul-smelling water even for five minutes, but we spend our lives living with it,” he said.Another resident, Rajveer Kanwar, said a larger sewer line laid recently had failed to resolve the problem.“Its capacity is too low for the population here. Earlier, the area flooded during the rains, but now it does not matter whether it is summer, winter or monsoon. We are living like this in every season,” he said.
