New Delhi: Water quality of Kitchener Lake, located behind Dhaula Kuan metro station, met the Central Pollution Control Board’s criteria, according to a compliance report submitted by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to National Green Tribunal. DPCC found that levels of pH, dissolved oxygen and free ammonia were within the prescribed standards.NGT had directed DPCC to independently collect and analyse water samples from the lake after questions were raised regarding its revival and current condition. In a DPCC report dated July 24, the sample collected from the lake on July 14 had a pH of 8.1, dissolved oxygen of 4.9 mg/l and free ammonia of 0.2 mg/l, all within class D criteria specified by CPCB.According to CPCB criteria enclosed with the report, class D water is meant for propagation of wildlife and fisheries. For this category, the prescribed limits include pH between 6.5 and 8.5, dissolved oxygen (DO) of 4 mg/l or more and free ammonia (as N) of 1.2 mg/l or less.DPCC also recorded faecal coliform at 15,000 MPN/100 ml. The analysis report found total dissolved solids (TDS) at 1,880 mg/l, total suspended solids (TSS) at 136 mg/l, chloride at 765.8 mg/l, hardness at 644 mg/l, chemical oxygen demand (COD) at 88 mg/l and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) at 40 mg/l. Sulphate was recorded at 118 mg/l and nitrate at 2 mg/l.
