Chennai: Chief minister C Joseph Vijay, announced that the annual insurance cover under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme had been increased from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh and a 400-bed multispeciality hospital would be established in Perambur at a cost of Rs 300 crore.
“Medical care is not a concession; it is a basic right of every human being,” Vijay said in the assembly on Wednesday.
The Perambur hospital will cater to the healthcare needs of north Chennai and provide advanced medical services.
The govt will also create around 6,098 additional seats in nursing, pharmacy and paramedical courses at a cost of Rs 351 crore. This will include seven new govt nursing colleges with 660 BSc Nursing seats.
The Chief Minister’s Cancer Care Mission will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 673.44 crore. An integrated cancer treatment facility will be established at Rajiv Gandhi Govt General Hospital, while regional cancer care centres will come up at five govt medical college hospitals.
Additional medical and surgical services for transgender persons will also be provided under the insurance scheme at seven govt medical college hospitals in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Chengalpattu, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri and Kanniyakumari.
