T’puram: Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, which has been bringing the wonders of the underwater world closer to the public, has entered its 30th year. Operated by Vizhinjam Regional Centre of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), the aquarium houses a diverse collection of marine life.Established in 1996, Sagarika has grown into a prominent centre for marine research, education and conservation. More than 80 species of marine organisms, including several rare varieties, are housed at the aquarium.Ornamental fishes are among the major attractions, while visitors can also see sharks, rays, crabs, shrimps, sea anemones, seaweeds and sea urchins. The aquarium offers an opportunity to observe marine organisms at close quarters and learn about their characteristics and behaviour.The facility is particularly suited for children and students, providing an engaging environment to learn about marine biodiversity and understand the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.With the Onam holidays approaching, Sagarika is expected to attract visitors looking for an outing that combines recreation and knowledge. The aquarium is open daily from 9am to 5.30pm. The entry fee is Rs 40 for adults and Rs 20 for children.
