Guwahati: City police arrested two alleged habitual thieves and recovered six stolen mobile phones near Basistha temple on Sunday night.Basistha police received several complaints of mobile phone thefts targeting pilgrims during the ongoing Bol Bom period.“Acting on reliable source information, a special operation was conducted in the Basistha Mandir area on Sunday, leading to the arrest of the two persons,” said Basistha police station officer-in-charge Kapil Pathak.The accused were identified as Babul Ali and Sukur Ali, both 22 and residents of Barobalachar village under Tamarhat police station in Dhubri district.Pathak said, “The accused wore pilgrims’ attire while carrying out the thefts, using the clothing to blend into the crowd and avoid suspicion.”Police recovered six stolen mobile phones from the duo and registered a case. Investigators are probing whether they were involved in other thefts reported during the pilgrimage season.Police urged devotees to remain vigilant in crowded areas, secure their phones and other valuables, and immediately report suspicious activity or theft.
