Chennai: Twelve juveniles were detained and questioned in connection with the murder of a Class XII student, who was assaulted by a gang of schoolmates in Thiruvottiyur. Police said the juveniles, aged 16 and 17 years, would be produced before Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) after the inquiry.Dhanush, 16, a history group student at Jai Gopal Garodia Government Higher Secondary School, Wimco Nagar, was subjected to assault and murder by a gang of Class XI students who left the spot after he fell unconscious on Friday evening. He was rushed to Government Stanley Hospital in a ‘108’ ambulance, where doctors declared him dead.Police said the incident stemmed from an argument that took place on Aug 13 between 18-year-old Dhanush and a 17-year-old Class XI student on the school premises. The school headmaster intervened, summoned both students and warned them.Investigators said that on the following evening, the Class XI student and his friends confronted Dhanush in a vacant plot behind Thiruvottiyur bus terminus, where the assaulted him. Police said some of the detained juveniles claimed that they tried to revive him after he suffered a seizure before leaving the spot.Based on a complaint lodged by Dhanush’s mother, Lakshmi, 45, Thiruvottiyur police registered a case and detained 12 juveniles studying at the same school.
