Berhampur: V Ramesh Rao, a para fencing player in Ganjam district, won the gold medal in Men’s Individual Foil in the ongoing Commonwealth Fencing Championship-2026 being held in Lagos in Nigeria, on Wednesday, the fourth day of the event.48-year-old Rao, a resident of Chhatrapur, the district headquarters town in Ganjam, delivered an impressive performance on the Commonwealth stage to win gold. “A proud moment for Indian fencing on the Commonwealth stage,” said the sports lovers in Ganjam district. His victory has sparked the celebration in his home town where his family members, residents and well-wishers hailed the achievement.The Commonwealth Para Fencing Championship is being held in Lagos from Aug 9 to 13. Of the total 13 players representing India, six are from the state, including Rao. He was not available to comment about his success, as he was busy with his performance on the last day of the five-day international event.
