Balasore: Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested by the West Bengal police from a hotel in Balasore district on Thursday in connection with a fresh case registered in connection to the Aug 2024 rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.The arrest follows a fresh FIR registered at Khardah police station on a complaint filed by the father of the RG Kar victim. Ghosh and two others have allegedly been accused of destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and forcing a person to act against his or her will.The allegations relate to the circumstances surrounding the cremation of the victim following the Aug 2024 incident. The accused are alleged to have used political influence to pressure the bereaved family into carrying out a hurried cremation, allegedly with the intention of suppressing evidence and preventing a second autopsy.According to the police, Ghosh was traced through mobile surveillance and apprehended from near National Highway-16 in Simulia area. He was subsequently brought to Simulia police station by a team of West Bengal police from the Barrackpore police commissionerate.DIG (eastern range) Pinak Mishra said, “Balasore police is extending all necessary support to the West Bengal police in the matter.”At the time of going to press, Ghosh was being taken to West Bengal by road. He is expected to be produced before a court in Barrackpore.
