New Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday handed over appointment letters to 1,368 teachers and said that every child studying in the national capital should have access to quality education, irrespective of their background.
The appointments include 1,015 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs), 236 Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) and 117 music teachers, according to a statement.
The recruitment drive is aimed at strengthening the teaching workforce in Delhi government schools and improving the availability of subject-specialist teachers, it said.
At a programme held at Bharat Mandapam, Gupta said the appointment letters came with the responsibility of helping shape the future of lakhs of children studying in Delhi government schools and emphasised that every child studying in the capital should have access to quality education, irrespective of their background.
The chief minister said the government was focusing not only on school infrastructure but also on ensuring that classrooms had qualified teachers, technology was used effectively and students received opportunities in sports and the arts.
She also spoke about teacher shortages she came across during visits to schools, where students told her that some institutions did not have teachers for subjects such as science and music, while a limited number of teachers sometimes had to handle multiple classes.
Education Minister Ashish Sood said the government had accelerated recruitment to address vacant teaching posts instead of treating shortages as a normal situation.
Around 751 candidates had already been appointed in April and May this year, while another 1,368 teachers are being inducted in the current phase, he said.
Sood said the government would continue to focus on teacher recruitment, training and capacity building to equip teachers to deal with changing technology and the requirements of the 21st century.
He said the objective was to ensure that wherever a teacher or subject specialist was required, one was available, and that every child in Delhi had an equal opportunity to receive quality education.
The minister said the government aims to strengthen Delhi government schools by combining modern infrastructure, smart classrooms and technology with dedicated and trained teachers. PTI
