MUMBAI: A Chennai woman returned home after a flight from Mumbai only to discover that jewelry she had packed in her luggage was missing. The 36-year-old woman has now approached the Sahar police, alleging that jewellery worth around ₹1 lakh was stolen while her bags were at the check-in counter at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
The alleged theft took place on July 29, when Hajira Abutahir reached Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Andheri East around 7pm to board her flight to Chennai. At around 8.40pm, she handed over her grey suitcase and a black bag at the airline’s check-in counter.
According to her complaint, Abutahir had kept a necklace, two pairs of earrings and a ring in one plastic box and silver anklets in another. The boxes were placed inside a black sack in her luggage. The jewellery was collectively worth around ₹1 lakh, she told the police.
She reached Chennai airport at around 1.45 am on July 30 and collected her luggage. It was only after reaching home and checking her bags that she realised that two gold earrings, a ring and the silver anklets were missing.
The next day, Abutahir went back to Chennai airport and checked CCTV footage, but did not find any evidence that her luggage had been tampered with there. She then suspected that the jewellery had been stolen while her luggage was being handled at the CSMIA.
Subsequently, she approached the Sahar police, who registered a case of theft against an unidentified person.
“We have registered a case of theft and are scanning through the CCTVs to find out who robbed the jewelry from the check-in counter,” said an officer from Sahar police station.
Abutahir had travelled from Chennai to Mumbai on July 18 and was staying at her maternal home. Her brother Abdulrazzaq lives in Dharavi, while her husband works at a private electrician’s shop in Chennai.
