Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) commenced a cleanup programme at Marina Beach on Monday. At least 100 workers were deployed for garbage collection, with regular coordination to ensure uninterrupted operations. Additionally, the civic body deployed all-terrain vehicles for litter collection and installed awareness boards at Marina Beach. The corporation also plans to impose penalties on those who litter, and appoint conservancy inspectors equipped with POS machines.GCC outsourced the cleanup drive for 10 beaches, including Marina, Elliot’s in Besant Nagar, and Thiruvanmiyur Beach. Operations at other city beaches will begin Tuesday.“The beach cleanup will be carried out daily by a private contractor, who will submit reports on the waste collected. Supervisors will be assigned to ensure worker attendance, zone-wise deployment, and timely garbage collection. An end-of-shift review will be conducted daily, with photographic documentation submitted to the control room,” said GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran. He added that penalties would be imposed on those who litter the beach. “We are appointing a few conservancy inspectors with POS machines, and operations will commence in a couple of days,” he said.“Our goal is to ensure zero littering. We have deployed sufficient staff to maintain cleanliness across all city beaches. As many as 22 vehicles have been deployed for mechanical sweeping. Independent engineers will monitor the daily operations,” said Parisutham Vedamuthu, project manager at Chennai Enviro Ltd.
