Jaipur: City police Tuesday recovered another 5kg of silver believed to be part of the treasure allegedly stolen during the demolition of a 200-year-old haveli in the Walled City, days after seizing 66.4kg of silver bars from five accused.The recovery comprised silver coins that the accused allegedly melted down to make them harder to trace, police said.Manak Chowk SHO Rakesh Khyaliya said the recovery was made during the investigation into the alleged misappropriation of valuables found inside the haveli at Vidyadhar Ka Rasta in Tripolia Bazaar. “The accused melted some of the silver coins. We have recovered around 5kg of silver from them,” Khyaliya said.The latest recovery comes days after police arrested contractor Mahesh Malhotra alias Chhotu (46), Jagdish Rajoria (51), Om Prakash Kheechi alias Pappu (54), Anuj Arora (28) and Rajni Malhotra (36) on Aug 8. Investigators earlier recovered two silver bars weighing 66.4kg, which the accused allegedly buried in a pit in the forest after deciding to divide the treasure among themselves.During interrogation, police learnt that the five found the first silver bar around 10 days after demolition began in Nov 2025. Instead of reporting the discovery, they allegedly continued demolishing the haveli to avoid suspicion and later returned after dark to remove the treasure on a scooter.Police said the accused later found another silver bar and around 1,500 silver coins. They allegedly divided the coins equally, taking 300 each, while deciding to split the two bars, weighing about 31kg and 35kg, after two or three years. The bars were subsequently buried in Jamdoli forest.Investigators suspect the treasure was gradually converted into cash and assets. Police said one accused sold coins to finance his daughter’s wedding, while another had jewellery made. Contractor Chhotu allegedly used proceeds to buy a JCB machine and two tractors.
