COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for an underground drainage (UGD) system covering Kalapatti and parts of Vilankurichi and Saravanampatti, which were added to the corporation limits in 2011.The tentative cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 824 crore. The proposal has been officially submitted to the state govt for administrative review and funding approval. Residents of corporation wards 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 21, 22 and 23 will benefit from the proposed project.Once cleared, this large-scale initiative is expected to improve local civic infrastructure, enhance environmental public health standards and streamline sewage disposal for thousands of residents across both rapidly growing areas.According to the proposal, the population of the project area is estimated to reach 1,30,264 by 2030. It is projected to increase to 1,72,132 by 2045 and 2,24,999 by 2060.Based on these projections, sewage generation has been estimated at 13.37 million litres per day (MLD) during the base year, 17.66 MLD during the intermediate stage and 23.09 MLD during the ultimate stage. The sewerage network has been designed after studying the topography of the areas. Sewage collected from households and other establishments will be carried through 10 sewage pumping stations and five lifting stations to a proposed sewage treatment plant at Ondipudur. The treatment plant will have a capacity of 17.66 MLD. After treatment, the water is proposed to be discharged into the nearby Noyyal river in accordance with the prescribed environmental standards. As part of the project, pipelines will be laid for a total distance of 411 km. The network will include 15,777 manholes to facilitate maintenance and inspection. Around 33,637 households are expected to receive underground sewerage connections under the scheme.“The scheme will improve sanitation, prevent the discharge of untreated wastewater and create cleaner residential neighbourhoods,” said corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja.
