Living rooms may usually feel like they follow a fixed layout or style. However, as design preferences evolve, it may also be time to give your living room an overhaul to ensure it is in tandem with changing lifestyle, personality, and routine.
The first step in identifying what your living-room refresh should involve is understanding what is in style and what is out. But, these shifts are not based solely on aesthetics, as they also demonstrate the changing priorities around wellbeing, practicality, and lifestyle.
We asked an expert which living-room trends are becoming outdated and which ones are taking their place. With her industry and design experience, Kirti Madan, creative and art director at Mahima Group, weighed in on how living rooms are changing in 2026.
What are the design priorities of living rooms in 2026?
Kirti confirmed to HT Lifestyle that living rooms are no longer designed only to entertain guests or for appearance’s sake.
“The living room has always been the center of any home, but in 2026, it has taken on a whole new meaning for its owners. Homeowners no longer design living rooms solely for their guests; now they are creating spaces that reflect their lifestyle and routines. Functionality and comfort have become the key features of the modern living room,” the designer said.
Earlier, the living room was largely a guest-oriented space, tidied up to maintain appearance and create a good first impression. Today, however, the focus is shifting and moving towards the people who use it every day. The traditional mould is breaking as living rooms evolve from formal, presentable spaces into more personal ones.
Living room trends that work in 2026
What does it take to refresh your living room? The first few steps are quite doable and not as intimidating as you may consider them to be. Refresh does not mean completely replacing everything. It means changing some elements here and there, so you feel more comfortable and your space is more functional. Current lifestyle is prioritised, so your space acts as wind beneath your wings as you multitask, not as any hindrance.
The designer shared a list of decor elements that are working in 2026:
1. Warm and natural earthy tones
- Cold greys are out. Grey tones were popular in living room design before. Though they looked elegant, they lacked warmth.
- Now, natural tones such as terracotta, sand, clay, olive green, warm beige, and mocha are becoming very popular.
- Warm tones create a comfortable atmosphere in the room and perfectly go with natural materials such as wood, linen, and stone.
2. Curvy furniture
- Clunky straight-line furniture is out. Clunky furniture, which visually dominates the room, is now fading as it makes the space more cluttered.
- Living rooms in 2026 feature a soft silhouette through curved sofas, curved coffee tables, and organically-shaped armchairs.
- Curved furniture helps create a feeling of coziness and facilitates movement in the room. The room can be used both for hosting guests and spending quality time with your family.
3. Layered materials
- Minimalist flat surfaces are out. Minimalism no longer means that you have empty rooms with white walls.
- Homeowners now opt for ‘warm minimalism,’ which means that various materials are layered in order to achieve simplicity of design.
- Natural fabrics, woven rugs, handcrafted ceramics, boucle upholstery, and textured wall surfaces— all of these materials bring sophistication to the interior.
4. Mixing stylings
- Perfectly matching furniture is not in style anymore.
- Instead of buying a complete living room set, people have started combining materials, finishes, and even different styles in their interior decoration.
- A contemporary sofa may be combined with a vintage coffee table or a handmade accent chair.
- The idea is not to have everything match, but rather to have the interior reflect one’s personal style.
5. Multipurpose living rooms
- Dedicated spaces are out.
- Modern life requires convenience and flexibility.
- This is why living rooms nowadays have to play many roles at once – they are reading nooks, working spaces, entertainment zones, and places where one can spend time with his/her friends and family all at the same time.
- Go for modular furniture, nesting tables, ottomans, and other multi-purpose furniture, which have become necessary elements.
As parting advice, the designer emphasised the importance of decorating according to your personal preference rather than chasing every trend or inspiration you see on social media. She also observed that homeowners are also personalising their living rooms with meaningful artworks, travel mementos, and heirloom pieces. When you add something personal in the living room, the space feels warm and welcoming.
