Bhagalpur: Naugachia police registered an FIR on Sunday in connection with the death of a newborn after a psychologically vulnerable woman gave birth on a roadside and allegedly killed the baby on Friday.Naugachia Model police station SHO (incharge) Arvind Kumar said an FIR had been lodged against the woman for murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, following the newborn’s post-mortem, police investigation and questioning of locals.The woman is undergoing treatment at the sub-divisional health centre at Naugachia under police custody, Kumar said. She will be produced before the Naugachia sub-divisional court on Monday and may be shifted to JLNMCH, Bhagalpur, for further treatment and rehabilitation, he added.The woman, who had reportedly been wandering the streets of Naugachia for nearly two years, gave birth under a tree near Pakda Acharya Tola of Lakshmipur Gosain village on Friday evening. Police said she allegedly killed the newborn by throwing the child onto the pavement after giving birth.Local residents later alerted the police after seeing the woman carrying the newborn’s body. Police took her to the sub-divisional health centre for treatment under custody and began an investigation. The newborn’s post-mortem was conducted after the incident.The incident has sparked concern among local representatives over the woman’s vulnerability and possible sexual abuse. Gourav Rai, a Zila Parishad member from Kharik block, demanded a thorough probe into how the woman became pregnant and raised the possibility of sexual abuse.
