NEW DELHI: The city recorded its wettest 24 hours in Aug in two years after logging 98.7 mm of rainfall from 8.30am Friday to 8.30 am Saturday. Higher single-day rainfall in Aug was last recorded in 2024, when Delhi received 107.6 mm on Aug 1.On Saturday, showers lashed parts of the city throughout the day. There are chances of very light to light rain from Sunday to Aug 14.In Aug so far, Safdarjung has received 230.1 mm of rainfall, which is 98.7% of the entire month’s normal of 233.1 mm. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Saturday, Pushp Vihar witnessed heavy rainfall for second consecutive day, logging 65.5 mm.During the same period, Najafgarh got 26 mm, Ayanagar 16 mm, north Delhi’s Ridge 9.4 mm, Lodhi Road 6.5 mm, Pusa 5 mm, and the city’s base station Safdarjung and Palam 4.4 mm each.Parts of Delhi witness heavy rain; air quality stays ‘satisfactory’ for ninth consecutive daySeveral areas in the city saw heavy rain to very heavy rain in the past 24 hours. Pushp Vihar logged 165 mm, Chhatarpur 138 mm, Ayanagar 115 mm, Palam 104.6 mm, Najafgarh 103.5 mm, Janakpuri 102.5 mm, Safdarjung 98.7 mm, Lodhi Road 86.8 mm and Ridge 89.8 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am Saturday. The highest single-day rainfall in Aug last year was recorded at 80.4 mm at Safdarjung on Aug 15.India Meteorological Department (IMD) classifies rainfall as ‘light’ when it is between 2.5 mm and 15.5 mm. Rainfall recorded between 15.6 mm and 64.4 mm is ‘moderate’, while it is considered ‘heavy’ when it is from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. Rainfall logged between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm is categorised as ‘very heavy’.The maximum temperature rose to 32.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal, Saturday.The heat index or ‘feels-like temperature’ increased to 44.7°C at 2.30 pm. The maximum had remained below 30°C for two consecutive days: 27.6°C Thursday and 27.5°C Friday.“It is likely to stay between 33°C and 35°C over the next few days,” said a Met official. IMD has not issued any colour-coded warning for rain from Sunday onwards. The minimum temperature settled at 24.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. It is likely to remain between 23°C and 25°C over the next three days.Delhi’s air quality continued to remain in the ‘satisfactory’ category for the ninth consecutive day.The air quality index (AQI) was 63 Saturday, same as Friday.
