Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday urged governor Gulab Chand Kataria to grant 10 days’ parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara on humanitarian grounds so he can meet his ailing mother. In a letter to the governor, Mann said, “Owing to her old age, the mother of Jagtar Singh Hawara is facing age-related health issues. This has resulted in deterioration of her health, which is a major cause of concern for everyone.”Mann also said, “Jagtar Singh Hawara has also filed CRWP No. 3868/2026 before the Punjab and Haryana high court, seeking directions for his release on parole. The HC has also directed that his parole application be considered.”Hawara was convicted as a key conspirator in the Aug 1995 assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh in a human-bomb blast at the Chandigarh secretariat that killed 17 people. A trial court sentenced him to death in 2007, but the Punjab and Haryana high court commuted the sentence to life imprisonment in 2010.
