Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala University vice-chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal has given a 24-hour ultimatum to the organisations concerned to remove the banners and boards put up by them defacing the entrances to the university headquarters and the Kariavattom campus.The registrar has been instructed to remove them at the university’s expense if the organisations fail to comply and recover the cost from those responsible. University security personnel will remove the boards and banners in the presence of the police.A new entrance gate was recently constructed at the Kariavattom campus at a cost of several lakhs and named after eminent educationist and former Indian President Dr S Radhakrishnan. The plaque bearing the name of Dr Radhakrishnan, who laid the foundation stone for the campus in 1962, has been obscured by boards, flags and festoons put up by left unions.Instructions have also been issued to remove promotional graffiti painted on the compound wall of the university headquarters as part of the annual conference of the CPM-led employees’ organisation. The university has also prohibited the installation of banners and boards that obscure heritage structures and important buildings.The VC’s action follows a decision taken by the syndicate last month to prohibit boards and banners within 200 metres of the university’s entrance and to provide designated spaces on campus where recognised student, teaching and non-teaching organisations can display their boards.
