Noida: Police are examining digital evidence and questioning staff at Sharda University to piece together the events that led to the alleged suicide of Jyoti Jhangra, a 21-year-old student of dental studies, on Friday. Two teams have been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the second-year BDS student, who was found dead in her hostel room on Friday night. The cops are analysing Jyoti’s mobile phone, laptop, tablet, and two diaries recovered from her room. They’re also scrutinising her call records and social media conversations to understand her final communications. A forensic examination of the suicide note found in the room is also underway, and experts are comparing the handwriting with other samples. Two faculty members — assistant professor Shayri Vashisht and associate professor Mahinder Singh Chauhan — have been arrested in connection with the alleged suicide. The FIR — registered on a complaint by Jyoti’s father — also names four other faculty members, including the dean of the dental school.“…Mahinder Sir and Shairy Maam are responsible for my death. I want them to go behind bars. They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I was in stress because of them for a long time. I want them to face the same thing. I am sorry. I can’t live like this anymore. I can’t,” Jyoti’s note read.Police said they were primarily investigating why the university authorities delayed informing them about the alleged suicide until the family, who travelled from Gurgaon, reported it.“We questioned the warden, security staff, and doctors who examined her. The only mistake we found on the part of the university authorities so far is that they did not inform the police until the family, who reached Greater Noida from Gurgaon, did so,” an investigating officer said. The tragedy has cast a pall over the campus, forcing many students to leave their hostels. “The situation inside the hostel is really tense. More than us, our parents are worried,” said a law student who relocated to a friend’s house. The university has suspended all examinations and practical sessions until further notice. The BDS written exams, scheduled to begin on July 22, have been cancelled.Student organisations, meanwhile, have given the university management a five-day ultimatum to take action against the other accused professors. Mohit Nagar, president of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha in Noida, warned of protests at the university gate if their demands weren’t met.A senior university official said, “We are cooperating with the police investigation. We have nothing to hide.” After an autopsy, Jyoti’s family took her body to their native village in Bhiwani, Haryana, and cremated it on Saturday evening.
