Gorakhpur: The SHO of Cantt police station was suspended on Thursday after a scuffle broke out between police personnel and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during the convocation ceremony at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University, where Uttar Pradesh governor and chancellor Anandiben Patel was also present.The confrontation reportedly began after ABVP workers were denied entry to the event due to security restrictions.Cantt police station SHO Sanjay Singh was placed under suspension following allegations of misconduct during the confrontation. The incident reportedly involved a heated exchange and jostling between police personnel and ABVP activists, including the organisation’s provincial organising secretary, Puneet Agrawal.According to officials, the dispute erupted when ABVP workers arrived at the university to attend the convocation but were denied entry due to security arrangements and access restrictions in place for the event. The disagreement soon escalated into a verbal altercation and later into a physical confrontation.While the convocation ceremony continued inside the auditorium, tension prevailed outside the university premises as police and ABVP members remained engaged in a standoff.Following the incident, Agrawal led a delegation of ABVP office-bearers and activists to the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), demanding action against the police personnel involved. Taking cognisance of the matter, the SSP ordered the immediate suspension of SHO Sanjay Singh.Police headquarters has also sought details of the incident involving Agrawal. SP City Nimish Patil said a departmental inquiry has been initiated, and a report has been sought within two days.“Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry,” Patil said.
