Gurgaon: Six stray cattle were killed and four injured after an allegedly speeding truck ran over them on Sector 18 Old Road in Faridabad on Wednesday night, triggering protests by locals and cow protection activists who set the truck ablaze before police and fire personnel brought the situation under control.According to police, the cows were sitting along one side of the road when the truck ploughed into them, killing six on the spot and leaving four with serious injuries.The injured cattle were shifted to nearby gaushalas for treatment, while the carcasses of the six that died were sent to a veterinary hospital for postmortem examination.A senior police officer said the truck driver was speeding and attempting to overtake a car moving parallel to him when he made a hard turn and lost control of the vehicle. Dim lighting on the stretch meant the cattle could not be spotted from a distance.The truck, carrying steel coils, was travelling from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan towards Kheripul at the time of the accident.As anger mounted over the deaths, some in the crowd set the truck on fire. Personnel from Old Faridabad police station and a fire brigade team rushed to the spot.The truck driver has been taken into custody and the vehicle seized. A case has been registered against him under sections 281 (rash driving), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety) and 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
