Pune: PMC has initiated steps to push ahead its proposed ropeway cable-car facility from Sarasbaug to Parvati, with a project management consultant now appointed to take up a detailed study, check feasibility and prepare basic designs.The project was declared by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee chairperson Shrinath Bhimale while presenting the civic budget for 2026-27. Civic officials said the consultant’s imminent report will throw more light on the actual design of the ropeway and how it can be built. PMC plans to execute the project via a public-private partnership (PPP) model, wherein it is exploring options to raise funds. The aim is to provide easy access to people between Sarasbaug and Parvati.As per the preliminary plan, the ropeway is proposed to start and land at PMC’s parking plot near Sarasbaug and Peshwe Adventure Park. Review meetings have been held by Bhimale in the last couple of months to push ahead the plan, and he told TOI that all technical aspects are being checked.This is not the first time a ropeway has been mooted between Sarasbaug and Parvati. In 1994, a similar proposal was tabled, and later became mired in controversy over its design and location. At the time, the BJP-Shiv Sena had opposed the project, besides a group of Congress corporators voting against it. Now, the BJP-led civic body is planning to execute the same.Civic officials said the tendering process has been started to appoint a consultant for pre- and post-tender activities, adding that a couple of months will be needed to finish formalities. The exact cost of the project is yet to be worked out, but sources said it is likely to be around Rs150 crore based on rough estimates.Bhimale said, “The project will be executed not only to protect the overall aesthetic of Sarasbaug and Parvati Hill, but also to provide easy access between the two places. Preliminary discussions have taken place with all stakeholders. PMC will not be spending money on this project and different financial options are being explored to execute it.”Apart from the ropeway, PMC is also planning a skywalk glass bridge in the Sarasbaug area, which will be the first such project in the city.
