Kolkata: Anandapur Police is investigating a case where a businessman residing in a condo has lodged an FIR against five individuals — his new wife and four members of her family — alleging criminal conspiracy, cheating worth more than Rs 2 crore, physical assault, and theft. He claimed he even contemplated dying by suicide before his relatives came to his rescue. However, the woman has claimed that she was a victim of domestic abuse.According to cops, the complaint filed on July 31 said the man’s family reportedly funded the couple’s May 2025 wedding and related ceremonies, bearing costs exceeding Rs 74 lakh. However, shortly after the wedding, the woman allegedly induced her husband to hand over cash gifts received during the wedding, and between May 2025 and Jan 2026, the accused allegedly extracted Rs 22.7 lakh through continuous threats of framing the complainant’s family in criminal cases.The man complained that the accused assaulted him and his grandmother. In Jan 2026, the woman allegedly left her husband’s house with jewellery belonging to her mother-in-law worth Rs 1.9 crore.
