Jaipur: A Union Bank of India employee was allegedly robbed of gold jewellery worth several lakhs at gunpoint inside the lift of his apartment building in Jawahar Nagar Monday morning. Police have launched an investigation and are examining all angles, including the possibility of foul play, as the complainant’s version is yet to be independently verified.

According to police, Naveen Kumar Sharma (37), a resident of Sai Kripa Apartment in Sindhi Colony, told investigators he was returning from a gym around 8.30 am when the incident took place.A senior police officer said Sharma claimed he entered the lift along with a young woman who also lives in the building. Two masked men allegedly followed them into the lift. When Sharma asked which floor they wanted to visit, they replied they were going to meet a person named Amit on the fourth floor. After Sharma told them no one by that name lived in the building, one of the men allegedly pulled out a pistol, pointed it at his head and forced him to hand over his gold chain, gold kada, gold ring and diamond ring.The accused allegedly compelled Sharma to take the lift back to the ground floor before fleeing. Sharma and the woman then used the staircase to reach his flat and informed family members, following which police were alerted.Police found that CCTV cameras inside the apartment complex had been non-functional for a long time, leaving no footage of the lift or entrance. However, cameras at a nearby building reportedly captured two suspects fleeing on a white Activa scooter without a registration plate. One was wearing a red shirt and pyjamas with his face covered by a white cloth, while the other wore a shirt and trousers.Residents alleged the robbery appeared well planned, claiming the CCTV DVR had been tampered with and the lift was prevented from opening during the incident.Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ranjta Sharma said police are analysing CCTV footage from nearby buildings, tracing the scooter’s route and verifying all aspects of the complainant’s account, including the possibility of foul play.
