Prayagraj: The fear of salary cuts and stern disciplinary action seems to have rattled men in khaki in Fatehpur district, who are running from pillar to post to submit their replies to the show-cause notices served on them by Superintendent of Police (Fatehpur) Abhimanyu Manglik.After analysing and reviewing the performance of his subordinates, particularly on issues such as laxity in investigations and remaining absent from duty without information, the SP issued show-cause notices to more than 100 errant policemen, ranging from constables to inspectors and sub-inspectors, giving them a stipulated 15 days to submit their replies or face salary cuts.Ironically, the fear of salary cuts has left the policemen worried, with many now running from pillar to post to submit their replies.The SP, after reviewing the performance of policemen, including former station officers and sub-inspectors, particularly with regard to the quality of investigations in criminal cases, including theft and burglary, and the submission of final reports in theft cases, issued show-cause notices asking them to submit their replies or clarifications.The SP warned that action would be taken against them under the relevant provisions of the UP Police Regulations, which include salary cuts. Since the SP took a tough stand against his subordinates for alleged laxity in performing their duties, policemen, particularly those who received show-cause notices within the past fortnight, are in a Catch-22 situation.Interestingly, the SP had already ordered salary cuts for half a dozen policemen who remained absent from duty without information. The order has not only puzzled the subordinates but also given them sleepless nights.A senior police officer said, “After analysing and reviewing the performance of policemen, the senior-ranking police official has issued show-cause notices to subordinates, asking them to submit their replies within the stipulated time.” He, however, added, “If the SP does not find the reply satisfactory, he has the right to take action under the Police Act.” Moreover, the SP is also empowered to award punishments involving a reduction in pay, provided it complies with the state-specific Police Subordinate Conduct and Appeal Rules.
