Bhubaneswar: Aimed at improving navigation for commuters while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of key junctions across the state capital, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has launched an initiative to upgrade the traffic posts at major intersections by installing LED digital display systems.“These traffic posts are among the visible smart infrastructure assets created under Smart City Mission. The addition of LED digital displays will improve their utility and help citizens identify important locations quickly, especially during peak traffic hours, and at major crossings,” said BSCL general manager Purandar Nanda.The project will cover at least 25 key intersections. Once completed, the upgraded traffic posts will display the names of junctions and important information, enabling commuters, particularly visitors and first-time travellers, to identify destinations easily and navigate the city without confusion.Officials said the modernised structures are expected to strengthen Bhubaneswar’s smart city identity while serving practical purposes for road users. The traffic posts were originally designed as multi-utility installations, and are already equipped with charging points and protective sheds to support traffic personnel deployed at the junctions.Officials added that the project is part of efforts to revitalise and optimise existing smart city assets rather than creating new infrastructure.Commuters welcomed the move, saying it would help improve navigation. “Many visitors stop to ask for directions at major junctions. If the location names and directions are displayed clearly through digital systems, it will make travel much easier,” said Sankalp Naik, a resident of Nayapalli.Another commuter, Rashmi Das, said that the initiative would be particularly useful during evenings and adverse weather conditions. “The illuminated displays will be easier to notice at night and can help people recognise important junctions without depending entirely on mobile navigation apps,” she said.Traffic personnel stationed at intersections also expressed optimism about the upgrade, especially after some such posts got damaged recently. “A few such traffic posts near Xavier Square and Damana Square got damaged, which need upgradation,” a traffic official said.
