Kolkata: The govt is planning to refurbish and rename Mullick Ghat flower market, under Howrah bridge off Strand Road, state minister of IT, science and technology, and biotechnology Kalyan Chakrabarti said on Wednesday. The redevelopment of the market will also focus on disposal and recycling of flower waste.According to the minister, the horticulture department is drawing up a beautification plan for the river bank and the flower market, one of the largest in Asia. The minister said the govt is taking steps to boost flower production in Bengal so retailers and exporters can meet rising demand.The minister said he attended a review meeting to discuss the “transformation of Mullick Ghat flower market into a more modern, well-organised, and world-class floral trading hub”. “We are committed towards strengthening infrastructure, improving facilities, and enhancing the market’s global appeal,” he said.According to the minister, there is speculation that the ghat was originally called Jagannath Ghat. “Before finalising the name of the ghat, we are delving deep into its history to get right facts,” he said. At present, around 1,000-1,200 traders sell flowers at the market that has 240 stalls. “If the govt redevelops the market, this will be a boon for us,” said Swapan Burman, a trader.
