Guwahati: Assam produces just over 26 lakh eggs a day against a daily requirement of more than 57 lakh, prompting the state govt to set a production target of 60 lakh eggs to achieve self-reliance, animal husbandry and veterinary and fisheries minister Nilima Devi said in the assembly on Tuesday, while responding to MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed’s question on egg production and rising prices.Devi said egg production in the state had increased by 51% over the past five years.“The govt has now set a target of producing 60 lakh eggs per day, with the objective of achieving complete self-reliance in egg production,” she said.Presenting the 2026-27 state Budget in the assembly on July 10, finance minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced increased investment in the fisheries, dairy and livestock sectors to boost rural incomes and reduce dependence on imports.Fish production has risen by 33% over the past five years, with the government targeting an annual output of 10 lakh metric tonnes by 2030-31 to position Assam as the fisheries hub of the northeast.The govt also announced a Rs 500-crore dairy expansion mission to increase daily milk production to 57 lakh litres. Milk production in the state has grown by more than 28% over the past five years.
