Jamshedpur: Seraikela-Kharsawan district police carried out a major crackdown on the illegal brown sugar trade on Tuesday. Acting on the directions of SP Manoj Swargiary, a special police team raided Muslim Basti area under the Adityapur police station limits and seized 20 packets of brown sugar and Rs 7,59,650 in cash.The SP said that the police had received an input that a habitual offender, Javed Ansari alias Laltu, and his associates were on the rooftop of his house counting money earned from the sale of brown sugar.The team surrounded the house and carried out a pre-dawn raid. The accused attempted to escape using the drain pipes and threw several bags containing cash onto the road.Later, one accused, identified as Azad Ansari, a resident of Garib Nawaz colony in Jugsalai was apprehended. Police recovered 20 packets of brown sugar and Rs 7,59,650 in cash from him.During interrogation, Azad revealed that the kingpin, Ansari, along with five other associates, managed to escape from the spot. The SP said raids are underway at the suspected hideouts of the absconding accused, and efforts are on to arrest everyone involved in the illegal drug trade.
