Kolkata: The state govt has planned to develop the Sundarbans as the second global eco-adventure and wellness tourism destination after Darjeeling, said tourism minister Shankar Ghosh.He made the announcement at an event on the occasion of World Mangrove Day.The minister said it had been mentioned in the state Budget that Darjeeling would come under the Centre’s ‘One state, One Destination’ scheme.“I had requested union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat if another destination could be included under the scheme. The request has been approved. We are considering two destinations, Mandarmani and the Sundarbans. In all likelihood, the Sundarbans will be developed as a global destination,” Ghosh said.

In order to develop the eco-adventure tourism site at the Sundarbans, it has to be mapped, said the minister.“I need the satellite image of the Sundarbans,” he said, adding that priority should be given to come up with some kind of a chart, map or diagram-based mapping that will ensure that even the mangroves are protected in the process of developing the eco-tourism destination.The minister also said the Sundarban Development Board and the state forest and tourism departments can jointly work on coming up with the development plan.
