Berhampur: More than 100 villagers — most of them women — from Gambharigaon and Kamaguda in Gajapati district’s Mohana block came together to repair the road connecting to their villages after the district administration failed to fulfill their long-standing demand.The road between Dhepaguda to Madakupa, a remote village, was in bad shape for several years. The situation would worsen during the rainy season. Villagers kept appealing to the district administration for a proper road, but it never materialised.Fed up with the endless wait, they came together to repair a 5km stretch of road. They first levelled the stretch, filled the potholes and repaired the mud tracks.Residents said the poor condition of the road had been affecting travel to schools, hospitals and emergency services for several years.

During a medical emergency, ambulances were not able to reach the village, they alleged.“As this road is our lifeline, we decided to repair it,” said villager Nirjani Raika. Garadama sarpanch Amita Gumidang said the road falls under the rural development department. The panchayat had written to the department engineers to take up the road work several times.Despite repeated attempts, Rajesh Das, block development officer, Mohana, was not available forcomment.
