Bengaluru: A peaceful protest at Freedom Park took a controversial turn after a woman Friday displayed provocative posters and raised slogans that police say could disturb public peace.According to a complaint filed by sub-inspector Sulochana, who was deployed on bandobast duty on July 24, a protest was organised by Karnataka Vidyarthi Sangatane (KVS) to condemn the lathicharge on students in Delhi and demand the resignation of former Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Police said 1,000 to 1,500 people participated in the demonstration.According to the complaint, between 5pm and 5.30pm, a young woman shouted slogans and displayed posters containing provocative messages supporting Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who are lodged in Tihar Jail after being arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The poster further contained a slogan against police (“Ukhad Le BLR Police”).When police moved into the crowd, the posters were concealed by some participants, making it impossible to seize them on the spot. Subsequently, police examined footage from CCTV cameras and videos recorded by personnel assigned to camera duty. During the review, investigators identified the woman.Based on the complaint, Upparpet police have registered a case under Section 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot — if rioting be committed; if not committed). A senior officer said, “We have information about the woman holding the poster, and further necessary action will be taken.”
