Lucknow: Noted geriatrician and palliative care specialist Dr Abhishek Shukla has been selected for the PhD in Palliative Care programme at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (US), one of the few institutions globally offering advanced doctoral research in the field.Dr Shukla will pursue research aimed at improving the quality of life of people living with serious and life-limiting illnesses. His work will focus on strengthening palliative care services, supporting caregivers and generating evidence to guide healthcare policy and practice.Dr Shukla said the programme would help bridge gaps between compassionate care and scientific evidence. “Quality palliative care should be guided not only by compassion but also by strong scientific evidence. I hope the knowledge gained through this research will contribute to improving palliative care services, education and policy development in India, ultimately benefiting patients and families facing serious illnesses,” said Dr Shukla, founder and director of Aastha Centre for Geriatric Medicine, Palliative Care Hospital, Hospice and Social Welfare Society.The selection is considered a rare feat, as admission to dedicated doctoral programmes in palliative care is highly competitive and only a limited number of healthcare professionals worldwide secure a place each year.
