BENGALURU: In a chilling case of alleged gender bias, a 13-day-old baby girl was allegedly murdered by her own father in Chikkaballapura after he was reportedly upset that his second child was also a daughter. The accused, Imran, has been arrested by Chikkaballapura police for allegedly throwing the newborn into the water sump at his in-laws’ house in Shanthinagar, Nakkalakunte, during the early hours of Wednesday.According to SP (Chikkaballapur) Kushal Chouksey, Imran allegedly confessed that he did not want another girl child. The couple, married for about four years, already had a daughter. His wife, Muskan, was staying at her parental home after she delivered their second daughter just 13 days ago.Police said while the family was asleep shortly after midnight, Imran allegedly lifted the infant from beside her sleeping mother, carried her outside and threw her into the underground water sump before quietly returning to bed. When Muskan woke up and found her baby missing, she alerted the family. A frantic search followed, with Imran reportedly joining in. He is said to have suggested checking the water sump. Family members were horrified to find the baby’s cap and socks floating in the water. After the sump was emptied, the body was recovered and rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.Police were alerted after the hospital reported the unnatural death of the newborn. Investigators became suspicious when relatives described the incident as an accidental drowning. “A 13-day-old infant cannot accidentally fall into a covered water sump. That immediately raised doubts,” SP Chouksey said. Officers questioned family members separately, during which the alleged truth emerged.Police said Imran, who works at Kempegowda International Airport, has been arrested.
