Margao: Health officials inspected the abandoned under-construction Quepem police station building after complaints about overgrown vegetation at the site and directed that the premises be cleaned immediately to prevent the outbreak of vector-borne diseases.The inspection was carried out at the request of NGO Goacan and led by PHC health officer Dr Socorro Quadros and sanitary inspector Jaikumar Naik. Officials found that the four-storey building had not been maintained by the contractor, with dense vegetation blocking access to the structure. They said the overgrowth prevented PHC staff from entering the building to inspect stagnant water and mosquito breeding sites on its various floors.The team decided that clearing the vegetation and removing debris would be taken up on priority. Officials will also contact the project contractor to obtain details of the septic tank and other underground tanks that could collect water during the monsoon.The police station building, sanctioned in 2016, has its RCC structure completed, but finishing work has remained stalled for years due to cost overruns and pending expenditure approval.
