Rourkela: District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Sundargarh, has directed an electric scooter maker and its Sundargarh service centre to pay Rs 1.76 lakh to a customer after finding deficiency in service and manufacturing defects in a two-wheeler sold to him.In its July 22 order, the commission instructed Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru; its Khurda unit and service station in Sundargarh to refund Rs 1,16,801, paid by the customer, Kishore Kumar Rochwani (49), for buying the scooter and associated charges. It also ordered payment of Rs 50,000 as compensation for mental agony and service deficiency, and Rs 10,000 towards litigation expenses. The commission said the amount must be paid within 30 days, failing which it will attract 9% annual interest until realisation.Complainant Rochwani, a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Sundargarh, had purchased an Ola electric scooter along with a charger on Aug 29, 2023, paying a total of Rs 1,16,801, including for registration, insurance and fulfilment charges.According to the complaint, the scooter developed repeated problems soon after and became non-functional on multiple occasions. Rochwani alleged that despite lodging complaints through Ola app and visiting the service centre repeatedly, the defects were not rectified permanently. He then approached the consumer commission in Nov 2025.Ola, in its written submission, contended that all complaints raised by the customer were attended to promptly and that necessary repairs were carried out whenever issues were reported. However, the commission observed that the vehicle continued to develop faults repeatedly soon after its purchase, and that the service providers failed to effectively resolve the problems. It held that the scooter suffered from manufacturing defects and ruled that the buyer was entitled to relief under consumer protection provisions.
