T’puram: In another inspiring act of organ donation, the organs of Kollam Corporation councillor B Ajith Kumar, who was declared brain dead after suffering a stroke, will give a new lease of life to five patients.Kumar (53), councillor representing division seven of Kollam corporation and chairperson of its standing committee on sports and education, suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was admitted to Travancore medical college hospital (Medicity), Kollam, on Sunday. Despite intensive treatment, he was declared brain dead around 1am on Wednesday. His family subsequently consented to donate his organs.A kidney and the liver were transported by road from the hospital through a specially created green corridor. The liver was transported to a private hospital in the state capital, while the kidneys were transported to Thiruvananthapuram MCH.One kidney was transplanted into a 48-year-old patient undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram MCH. The second kidney was allocated to a 37-year-old woman from Varkala receiving treatment at Kollam medicity. The liver was transplanted into a 68-year-old patient from Kazhakkoottam at the private hospital in the state capital. Kumar’s corneas were donated to Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Thiruvananthapuram.Kumar, a resident of Kurippuzha, is survived by his brother, B Suresh Kumar, and sister B Ajitha Kumari.
