Aizawl: The fast-track court in Mizoram’s Kolasib district on Wednesday convicted a 56-year-old Vairengte resident and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 for raping a 12-year-old girl, court sources said.Court judge R Vanlalena convicted Lalramtiama under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The court ordered that he serve an additional six months in jail if he defaults on payment of the fine.A Vairengte woman filed an FIR at Vairengte Police Station on May 22, 2023, alleging that her 12-year-old school-going daughter was raped by Lalramtiama, who was then a village council member.The prosecution said the girl later told her mother she was raped three times by the accused.The court delivered the verdict after considering the medical report and the statements of the survivor, witnesses and the investigating officer. Lalramtiama was sent to Kolasib district jail after the judgement.
