NEW DELHI: Sub-inspector Shrinivas Sharma, 58, suffered a fractured leg after being struck by a police barricade, and was later allegedly dragged and assaulted by members of the crowd while on duty during the Jantar Mantar protest. He was deployed near the SBI headquarters in Connaught Place.As per police, more than 200 personnel from Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), including constables and senior officers, were injured.“A section of the crowd suddenly turned violent and began pelting stones at cops,” Sharma alleged, adding, “They breached the barricades and hurled them at us.”He claimed the crowd turned again violent while cops were escorting a politician and his supporters away from the area. “I was assaulted again, sustained more injuries and was forcibly dragged by some members of the crowd, and suffered a fracture as a result,” he alleged.Head constable Rajender, who is posted in North district and was deployed in the Sansad Marg area, said he was escorting a senior police officer away from the crowd when he was allegedly attacked. “I was surrounded by protesters. They abused and assaulted me for nearly five minutes,” he alleged, saying he was injured near his eyes, on his head and on his waist.Rajender said he crawled underneath a nearby police van and remained hidden until fellow police personnel reached him.Head constable Naveen Ola, posted at DBG Road police station, was deployed in the Sansad Marg area since 7am. The protesters gradually became aggressive, according to him.“Around 12.30pm, when cops stopped the protesters from moving ahead, a section of the crowd began pelting stones. I sustained a head injury and required three-four stitches on my forehead. The crowd was not listening to repeated appeals by police and turned aggressive,” he said.Inspector Ashish Dubey, deployed with DCP (North) Raja Banthia near police headquarters, said the situation escalated when a section of the crowd began pelting stones. Dubey sustained injuries below his eye, on his waist and leg. “It was distressing. Some members in the crowd also abused me,” he alleged.
