Margao: Congress workers, led by former party chief Amit Patkar, gathered outside Vidyut Bhavan, Panaji, demanding a resolution to the prolonged grievances of contractual meter readers employed under the electricity department. Many of these workers, the party pointed out, have served on temporary contracts for close to 15 years without being absorbed into permanent service. Patkar said continued denial of job security and regular employee benefits amounted to injustice, and called on the authorities to act without further delay. The party has given govt until Sep 20 to act, failing which it has threatened to revive protests after Ganesh Chaturthi.Department officials who met the delegation said regularisation was already under way for staff with over 10 years of service, and that provident fund coverage, medical insurance and leave benefits would follow once formalities were completed.
