T’puram: Thiruvallam police arrested two men after one of them allegedly assaulted a police officer and the other threatened the patrol team during a late-night drunken driving check at Vazhamuttom early on Sunday.The incident occurred around 12.20am when a police team conducting a special drive against drunk driving spotted a car speeding from Vazhamuttom towards Pachalloor. The officers chased the vehicle and intercepted it. A breathalyser test confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, police said.When officers demanded the vehicle key to initiate legal action, the passenger, Roshan, 33, of Nagaripuram in Palakkad, allegedly got out of the car, abused the police and struck civil police officer Nasimuddin on his right hand with a metal bangle he was wearing.Police overpowered Roshan and took him into custody. The driver, Sampath, 23, of Alukadu, Poonthura, allegedly threatened the officers and tried to forcibly open the police jeep door to free his associate. He was also arrested.Police seized the metal bangle allegedly used in the assault, mobile phones from both accused, the car they were travelling in and a partially consumed 650-ml beer bottle found inside the vehicle. Both accused were medically examined before being produced at the police station.A case was registered under Sections 281 (rash driving), 296(b) (obscene abuse), 121(2) (assault on a public servant), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 185 (drunk driving) and 179(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is under way.
