Mohali: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually inaugurated redeveloped railway stations at Mohali and Kalka under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a flagship initiative of the Centre aimed at modernising railway infrastructure and improving passenger amenities across the country.These two are among the four redeveloped stations under the Ambala Railway Division. The other two stations dedicated to the public are Amb Andaura and Sri Anandpur Sahib.Addressing a gathering in Jalandhar during the virtual inauguration, Modi said a modern transport network, with world-class railway stations and improved road connectivity was being developed in Punjab. He said that despite the state not having a BJP govt, the Centre remained committed to accelerating infrastructure development through major projects.‘Citizen is supreme’Emphasising the principle of “Nagarik Devo Bhava” (Citizen is supreme), the Prime Minister said the Centre’s governance model places citizens at the heart of development. He said the govt was focused on improving the quality of life of every Indian while creating new opportunities for the poor, middle class and youth through infrastructure-led growth.After flagging off the Sant Ravidas Express from Jalandhar to Varanasi, Modi referred to the teachings of Guru Ravidas and commended the community for promoting social harmony.Overhaul of Mohali railway stationMohali Railway Station has been redeveloped at a cost of around Rs 22.1 crore, with several advanced facilities added for passengers.The station now has lifts, a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge, upgraded platforms, spacious waiting halls, tactile pathways for visually impaired passengers, improved lighting and signage, and enhanced amenities for Divyang passengers.The redevelopment is aimed at making the station more accessible, safe and convenient for commuters.Kalka railway station upgradeKalka Railway Station has been redeveloped at a cost of around Rs 31.4 crore.The upgraded station features a redesigned circulation area, improved parking facilities, lifts and ramps, modern toilets, better accessibility for Divyang passengers, and upgraded platform shelters to provide greater comfort and convenience.Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini attended the virtual inauguration programme at Kalka Railway Station, while officials and public representatives were present at Mohali Railway Station.Amrit Bharat Station SchemeRailway stations across the country are being transformed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The initiative focuses on improved passenger amenities, enhanced accessibility, better safety standards and modern infrastructure while preserving local architectural identity.
