Dibrugarh: A sea of devotees pulled Lord Jagannath’s chariot through Dibrugarh on Thursday in a vibrant display of faith. The streets were choc-a-bloc with thousands of devotees pouring in.Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the inaugural ceremony of the Rath Yatra at Shri Shri Jagannath Temple, offered prayers and formally inaugurated the festival amid devotional chants and rituals.“It is a moment of immense blessing to be part of this sacred tradition. The Rath Yatra is a celebration of the unity, culture and devotion of the people of Assam,” the governor said on the occasion.More than 10,000 devotees joined the procession, pulling the chariot over a 3.5-km route from Shri Shri Jagannath Temple to Auniati Satra at Kacharbari. The yatra began from the Shri Shri Jagannath Cultural Complex at Baughpara, Khanikar, and proceeded to Sri Auniati Satra.The celebration marked the 12th edition of the Rath Yatra Mahotsav, organised by the Shri Shri Jagannath Cultural Trust, Dibrugarh. Devotees from across upper Assam, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, took part in the procession.Over the past 11 years, the Rath Yatra at the Khanikar temple has grown into one of upper Assam’s major spiritual gatherings, drawing thousands of devotees annually. This year’s event featured decorated chariots, devotional music, bhajans and traditional rituals passed down through generations.
