Aizawl: Four buildings, including a restaurant, a grocery shop and two residential houses, were swept away by a massive landslide and mudslide triggered by heavy monsoon rain in Tawipui South village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district early Tuesday morning, officials of the Lunglei District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said. The officials said no loss of human life was reported as the occupants of the buildings had already abandoned them on Monday evening. The buildings, construction materials and most of the properties remain completely buried under debris, with little possibility of retrieval. Reports from the village said the landslide also completely blocked National Highway-02, and it is unclear when the highway — linking the southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha with the rest of the state — will be cleared.“The entire hill collapsed leaving heaps of soil debris on the highway, making it a Herculean task to completely clear the highway in the near future,” the reports said, adding that dumping the soil near the highway would also require official permission from landowners. While drizzle continues in northern parts of the state, heavy rain has persisted in the south, where residents are facing widespread damage. Nearly 200 families have been displaced due to floods, landslides, mudslides and rockfalls, especially in Lunglei and Lawngtlai districts.
