Kanpur: A jeweller has alleged that a thief decamped with a bag containing cash and gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 50 lakh from his shop in the Kakadev police station area.According to police, the theft came to light on Saturday evening when the jeweller was about to close his shop and found the bag missing. He immediately informed the police through UP-112. On Sunday morning, ADCP (Central) Dr Archana Singh and ACP Swaroop Nagar Ruchi Shri visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.Devendranath Verma, a resident of Vijay Nagar, who runs a jewellery and clothing shop in the locality, said he had opened the shop at around 4 pm on Saturday. About an hour later, he left the shop open and went to the toilet. When he returned, everything appeared normal. However, at around 8 pm, while closing the shop, he discovered that his black-coloured bag had gone missing.Verma alleged that the bag contained around 400 grams of gold jewellery, one kilogram of silver jewellery, Rs 50,000 in cash and other valuables, taking the total value of the stolen property to nearly Rs 50 lakh. He said he was shocked and immediately alerted the police.He further told police that a man claiming to be a resident of Vijay Nagar had been visiting his shop for the past four to five days and had also purchased clothes from the store.During the inquiry, police found the circumstances surrounding the theft suspicious, as the jewellery shop had remained open and did not have a single CCTV camera installed. ADCP Archana Singh said the jeweller was being questioned in detail and CCTV footage from nearby establishments was being examined to trace the suspect.
