Kanpur: Cloudy skies, cool south-westerly winds and light overnight showers kept temperatures below normal in Kanpur on Saturday, providing much-needed relief from humid conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next 24 hours, with active monsoon conditions expected to persist across the region.Although weather agencies had predicted light showers during the day, rainfall remained limited to 2.8 mm, recorded late Friday evening. The maximum temperature in Kanpur Nagar settled at 33.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 24.6 degrees Celsius. Maximum relative humidity touched 86 per cent, but comparatively lower moisture levels, coupled with south-westerly winds blowing at 7.1 to 16.3 kmph, prevented the weather from becoming excessively sultry.According to the Lucknow Meteorological Centre, active monsoon conditions and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are likely to keep the districts of the Kanpur division under predominantly cloudy skies over the next 24 hours. Heavy to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and thundershowers is expected in parts of the division. The IMD has specifically forecast heavy to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, in Kanpur Nagar over the next 24 hours. The sky is expected to remain overcast, with winds likely to blow at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. The department said there is little possibility of clear sunshine, although brief sunny spells may occur after rainfall activity subsides.SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said atmospheric moisture and a fresh influx of moisture into the region are likely to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies between July 11 and July 13. He said light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning, is expected during this period, while isolated areas may also receive light drizzles.Pandey said the weather is expected to remain pleasant over the next few days. However, he cautioned that prolonged sunny spells between rain events could cause temperatures and humidity levels to rise sharply, leading to uncomfortable weather conditions.
