Margao: Alleging that construction work was under way on a proposed mega housing project at Davondem in Fatorda despite the absence of a valid construction licence, local residents on Thursday marched to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) demanding immediate action. The protesters, who marched from the project site to the Margao municipality, alleged that the MMC administration had been assuring action for the past five months, but nothing had been done on the ground so far. They were restrained from entering the building by the police but later a 10-member delegation was allowed to meet chief officer Madhu Narvekar. The delegation placed its objections before the chief officer and demanded immediate action. Narvekar assured the delegation that a site inspection would be carried out and the legal aspects examined, following which an appropriate decision would be taken within 15 days. The protesters said the validity of the construction licence granted for the project had expired in 2008 itself, and alleged that work was continuing on the strength of the old, lapsed licence. They said around 300 flats were proposed under the project, which would bring an estimated 1,200 new residents to the area, altering the demography of the area. The protesters warned of intensifying their agitation if the MMC failed to act against the construction project.
