Following her 12-year-old self’s dream of becoming a fashion designer, Amanda Uprichard attended Parsons School of Design and soon dove headfirst into the New York City fashion scene. While based in the Garment District, she established her namesake label as a one-woman operation in 2008 before gradually scaling the independent brand into the occasionwear destination it is today. Amanda Uprichard specializes in trend-forward daytime dresses and black-tie attire, with the designer describing her core customer as “wearing high heels to the beach.”
The brand is currently stocked at retailers like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Revolve, and its wholesale business is only continuing to grow: It’s expanded into 21 new retail doors, with another 25 scheduled to open this year. Its direct-to-consumer business is also on a hot streak, as its year-to-date DTC growth exceeded 35%. With nearly 20 years under her belt as a fashion designer and business owner, Uprichard’s biggest lesson has been a crash course on perseverance.
“You have to be incredibly focused and determined, and just really not to give up in the face of failure,” Uprichard said. “I’ve just had so many failures, you cannot even imagine. When you’re in your failures, sometimes it’s really hard, but honestly, you just cannot give up.”
On The Fashionista Network, Uprichard discussed the brand’s retail strategy, how the pandemic altered its product assortment, the qualities she looks for in a potential hire, the label’s next steps and more. Watch the full interview on YouTube below.
